About

Our Mission

The mission of the Language Lab at the Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication is to advance and promote second language education, literature and culture by providing leadership in integrating technology with instruction and learning at Rice, in Texas and beyond.

The Language Lab “is committed to staying abreast of developments in second language education and technology and to maximize teaching and learning experiences by: a) providing technology facilities and services; b) offering training, workshops, events and publications; c) supporting curriculum and materials development; d) developing programs and services to cultivate connections with local and global communities; e) developing and administering second language assessment measures; and f) promoting research on educational technology, second language acquisition and related disciplines.”*

  • Computer Language Lab for student use.
  • Information and training for use of equipment and software.
  • Support for technology-enhanced curriculum development.
  • Professional and knowledgeable staff to assist you.

Services Provided for Language Faculty

  • Space reservations for orientations to teach students how to use software programs required for language courses.
  • Reservations and support for videoconferencing.
  • Workshops in integrating technology into the foreign language curriculum.
  • Digitizing of video and audio resources for class use.
  • Videotaping of classes and instructors.

Services Provided for Language Students

  • Internet access to digital audio and video material required for foreign language classes.
  • Twenty computers for the use of foreign language software programs only available in the Lab.
  • Technical support for input and browsing of non-Western languages and all the software programs required for language courses.

 

Computer Classroom

Twenty Windows computer stations with webcams.  Each computer has software programs to supplement the study of thirteen languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English (ESL), French, German, Hebrew,  Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and  Spanish; a teacher station at the front of the classroom is equipped for projection.  The classroom is available by reservation for class use for orientations, videoconferencing, and computer based exams.  The lab is available for student use during open times and evenings.

The Language Lab is located on the first floor of Rayzor Hall on the Rice University Campus; it is located between the Fondren Library and the statue of William Marsh Rice, facing the Academic Quad.
